Manage your adult Oyster card on the move with the TfL Oyster app. You can’t currently add Oyster photocards to this app. You can’t currently buy discounted tickets through the app. I have bought top up online and advised to collect it from the reader which I assumed was the ticket machine. ![]() ![]() Going to the station I was then advised by the guard on duty that I would have to show it to the reader to start a journey there and back and it would be refunded. I do not want to start a journey now, I just wanted it ready for use whenever. This is 2017, why can this service not be simplified. Top up online and it shows on your card immediately. Now because of the brainchild of whoever I will now wait for it to be refunded back into my account. If you can't create this online top up simply, please remove it so others cannot get as annoyed as me. The app is good. However, my oyster card is now so unreliable since I have used the app to add travel cards. The amount of times my card can't be read has increased especially on buses. Lucky the drivers have waved me on in all cases. Today picking up a travelcard at Holborn (there is a live travel card and pay as you credit on there) but after five taps of it saying 'seek assistance' I have to step away as the tuts from behind get serious. However, I then wait a minute and tap again and I am through. Even taking the card out the wallet makes no difference. Is the card dying or is this a consequence of using the app? London Travelcard v Oyster Card v Contactless Card in 2018 Make an informed choice on the right London travel pass for you For the visitor to London, the question of which travel pass to purchase can be confusing. Those living and working in London will almost always have an Oyster Card in their wallet and, as a general rule of thumb, the Oyster Card is the benchmark to be beaten, although people are fast migrating to contactless payment cards. Many will have a long-term travel pass attached to the Oyster, and these can be valid for as short as a week or as long as a year. Buying a single ticket for one journey is rare, you are penalised very heavily financially. A one-way single ticket on the Underground in Central London is double that of an Oyster fare and not far off the maximum you can pay in a day of unlimited rides using Oyster. On the buses buying a one-way ticket is just not an option offered. The Contactless payment card is the new option available and the authorities hope this may become the dominant channel in the longer term. However for short-term visitors the adoption rate is far less and for good reason, especially if you are from overseas and do not have a British sterling or pound currency credit/debit card. For the tourist or those making short visits to London there are aspects of the Travelcard that make them appealing and if understood can make Travelcards cheaper than Oyster cards or Contactless payment cards, especially if you are visiting the major sights on a first time visit. So all in all it can be quite confusing for the visitor planning their visit to London to make an informed choice. This page discusses the differences between Oyster, Contactless Payment Cards and Travelcards so you can identify the right product for you. Our detailed, and pages give a full explanation of each. Where you can use London travel options All three options, Oyster card, Contactless payment card and Travelcards cover the same London public transport, with the exception of Gatwick Airport (see below): - The network. - The network. - The network in Greater London. - Docklands Light Railway, TfL Rail and Overground Railway. - Discount on many (though not Contactless payment card and fragmented implementation on Oyster/Travelcard). You cannot use any on the Heathrow Express train, the Heathrow Connect train between Heathrow and Hayes and Harlington and the High Speed Trains between St Pancras and Stratford. You can use Oyster or Contactless payment cards on the trains to/from Gatwick Airport but it may well be cheaper to buy tickets from the railways instead. You cannot use Travelcards to/from Gatwick Airport and it may be cheaper to travel using rail tickets between Gatwick and London than using Oyster. Stansted, Southend and Luton airports are outside London and beyond the scope of London public transport or TfL, so the airport buses and trains from these airports are not covered. City Airport is serviced by the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and is covered. Differences in ease of purchase/charges Both Oyster and Travelcard can be purchased on demand from Underground stations, Visitor Centres and literally hundreds of retail outlets, such as newsagents and convenience stores inside London. There are few places outside London you can purchase them. ![]() Note at Underground and DLR stations there are no manned ticket desks, just ticket machines. You can purchase Oyster cards and Travelcards online from the TfL online shop (banner link below) and have them delivered to your home address wherever in the world. Oyster cards you purchase in this way are Visitor Oyster cards, the differences are explained further down the page. Contactless payment cards are your normal personal credit/debit cards, so as long as your cards support the Contactless payment technology then you don't have to do anything. You just use your credit/debit card as an Oyster card. Deposits & Admin Charges When you buy a Visitor Oyster card you pay an activation fee (currently £5) which is not refundable. For standard Oyster cards purchased in London you pay a £5 deposit which is refundable (see Oyster v Visitor Oyster section below). For short-term visitors, contactless payment cards and Travelcards are the only travel passes where you do not incur the deposit/admin charges of Oyster purchase. Oyster cards & Visitors Oyster cards There are two types of Oyster card. If you buy in London you get the standard Oyster card. If you buy outside London, including airport trains and National Express coaches, overseas agents and online you will get a Visitors Oyster card. Oyster & Visitor Oyster card differences - Key Facts: • Oyster fares and caps are the same whether you use a standard Oyster or a Visitor Oyster, a common misconception. • For Visitor Oyster cards you pay an activation fee (£5 in 2018) which is non-refundable. If you buy an Oyster card in London you pay a deposit (£5 in 2018) which is refunded (in cash/coins) when you surrender/cancel the Oyster card. • You cannot load 7 day Travelcards on Visitor Oyster cards only standard Oyster cards. If you are in London for 5 plus days having a 7 day Travelcard loaded on your Oyster can save you significant cash. For 5 days daily travel in London, Oysters and 7 day Travelcards for most visitors will be almost identical in price. For 6 or 7 days the sixth and seventh days are effectively free for a 7 day Travelcard compared to the Oyster total price. • At the end of your trip both Visitor Oyster cards and standard Oyster cards you can cancel at ticket machines and get any cash left on the Oyster refunded (in cash/coins). However at the time of writing there is no such facility at Gatwick Airport to get refunds. • For a standard Oyster card you can, if you wish, register online. With Visitor Oyster cards you cannot. The main advantages of being registered online is that if you lose your Oyster you can stop its use, you can get a good audit trail of your journeys and you can request a refund of cash left on your Oyster online direct into your bank account. • Visitor Oyster cards have “special offers” made available to purchasers, normally discounts on anything from food to theatre tickets relevant to visitors. Whether you would make use of any of these offers is another thing and the specifics of offers are often not clear. Returning your Oyster card at end of trip If you plan on returning to London at some time then you can retain your Oyster and use it again on your return however far in the future. Otherwise you will want to reclaim your Oyster deposit and any cash balance left on your Oyster or Visitors Oyster. You can do this using any ticket machine (though notably not at Gatwick Airport). The machine will cancel the Oyster card and refund your deposit plus any cash left on your Oyster up to £10. If you forget to get the refund whilst in London you can post the Oyster card back to TfL customer services requesting the refund. For overseas visitors the big disadvantage is that the refund will be in the form of a cheque in British pounds. This procedure is the same for both Oyster cards and Visitor Oyster cards. Can I share Oyster cards? Do I need photo ID? ![]() Only one person can travel with an Oyster card at any time. If 2 people are travelling together they need 2 Oyster cards. However, another person can use your Oyster card when you are not travelling. No photo is required for an Oyster and your name is not stamped on the card. You can register the Oyster card if you want but that is entirely voluntary. For concessions, principally child fares, a separate Oyster Photo ID card is often required if your child is 11 years or older and wants child fares (see bottom of the page). Photo ID • No photo ID is required when you buy an Oyster card, except where children are concerned. You may well need an Oyster Photo ID card of one kind or another to access child rates. See the at the foot of this page for which one (if any) and fees. • No photo ID is required when you buy adult Travelcards from anywhere but railway stations. • For a 7 Day Travelcard or longer (adult or child) bought from a railway station ticket office (not Underground) you need to bring along a passport size photo for a rail photocard to be made up on the spot and free of charge. • 7 Day Child Travelcard or longer bought from anywhere but a railway station or with TfL online shop requires an Oyster ID Card. Adults do not. See the at the foot of this page for which Oyster ID Card (if any) and fees. Contactless payment cards - are your cards compatible? Like all new technologies, compatibility and speed of introduction varies across the world. To make sure Contactless payment cards are even going to be an option for your credit/debit cards take a look at our Contactless payment card dedicated page linked below. Also do remember if you are a visitor with a non-UK issued credit/debit card you'll probably be hit for foreign exchange charges by your card issuer like all other foreign purchases. Oyster card compared with Contactless payment cards + Travelcard - which is cheapest? • As a general rule a Travelcard is more expensive than an Oyster card or Contactless payment card. The exception is if you make 3 or more journeys for 6 days or more within a 7 day period. In this case a 7 day Travelcard works out cheaper than an Oyster or Contactless payment card. Otherwise an Oyster on a Pay As You Go basis or a Contactless payment card is cheaper. If you are a resident or long-term visitor there are monthly and annual Travelcards. • You can load 7 day Travelcards onto an Oyster card and switch between Oyster Pay As You Go and Travelcard as your travel patterns change. You cannot do this on a Contactless payment card. • If you use a credit/debit card using Contactless payments whose home currency is not British pounds your card will be charged like any other overseas purchase so you should check whether you will be hit for punitive foreign exchange charges by your card issuer - there is a wide variance between different cards. The best cards have no fees. • If you have children under 18 year of age then your decision will probably be driven by access to child fares. Travelcards often give you access to child rates much easier than Oyster for short duration visits - see the further down this page. • Discount entitlements can't be added to a Contactless payment card. So if you are eligible for free or discounted travel, you should continue using your existing Oyster card. This in effect rules out children using Contactless payment methods.• If you are doing the sights in London like the Tower of London. London Eye, Madame Tussauds etc. Then you really should read about the which Travelcards can qualify you for, but Oyster cards do not. Oyster v Contactless payment cards v Travelcard peak & off peak travel - the differences Price caps apply to Oyster cards and Contactless payment cards. A price cap is the maximum you can pay in any one calendar day (see next section down). Prior to 2015 there were separate price caps, peak and non-peak for Oyster. So if you travelled in the peak period then you triggered a higher 'peak' price cap - this is no more. However 1 day Travelcards do still have peak and off-peak products. The 1 day Travelcard peak travel period is Monday to Friday before 9.30am, there is no afternoon peak period. If you travel in the peak period you need a peak 1 day Travelcard. The substantial variance in fares is detailed on the price table below. All Travelcards with a duration 7 days or longer cover both peak and off-peak times. Oyster / Contactless payment cards price caps v Travelcard prices Travelcards are a flat rate pass where you have unlimited rides for the time period purchased. Oyster / Contactless payment cards are charged on a per journey basis but has a daily maximum you can be charged. Once you hit this 'price cap' through individual fares aggregating, you are charged no more for subsequent journeys made that day. The daily Oyster/Contactless payment cards price cap is less than the cost of a 1 day Travelcard so over one day is cheaper. Over longer periods Travelcards can work out cheaper depending on your travel. For instance a 7 Day Travelcard is less expensive than an Oyster or Contactless payment cards if you travel 3 or more times each day for 6 days or more in a 7 day calendar period. Travel zones All travel (except the buses) is charged by the number of zones you travel through. Most tourists never get out of zones 1 and 2 where all the main sights and hotels are, but there are exceptions like Heathrow Airport in Zone 6. Look at the page for a full explanation and zone maps. Using an Oyster card with a 7 day Travelcard loaded onto the Oyster card Most visitors will just travel in the central zones, 1 and 2. If you are staying more than 5 days in Central London then a 7 day Travelcard zone 1-2 is probably going to be cheaper than just an Oyster card. 7 day Travelcards can be loaded onto your Oyster card and be used in combination with Oyster on a Pay As You Go basis for a single journey. Note this flexibility is not available on Visitors Oyster cards or Contactless payment cards. This is useful if you want to take the occasional trips outside the central area (zones 1 & 2), perhaps to Heathrow Airport in zone 6 from Central London in Zone 1. By loading some PAYG money onto your Oyster as well as the Travelcard zone 1-2 the ticketing system will recognise the zone 1 and 2 Travelcard for the zone 1 and 2 segment of the journey and take the fare for zones 3 to 6 from the Oyster PAYG amount on your card. Similarly if you are staying in London for 9 days you might buy an Oyster Card and use it on a PAYG basis for 2 days and have a 7 day Travelcard loaded and use that for the remaining 7 days. Anybody with an English National Concessionary bus pass can use that on London's red buses too and travel free of charge. If you have a railways you can get your 1/3 discount on off-peak Oyster fares. You have to ask a member of staff to load the concession onto a standard Oyster card (note, not a Visitors Oysters card) at an Underground station after showing your Seniors Card. If you have a railways you can also buy 1 day off-peak zone 1-6 Travelcards at with the discount applied. Child concessions This is a complex subject and is covered in detail at the foot of the page. A child is defined as under 16 years old, but in the last couple of years it has been possible to get child fares after jumping through a few hoops up to the age of 17. Children under 11 can travel free on the London Underground, DLR and buses without a ticket. If a child is between 11 and 15 years old you require an Oyster 11-15 Photocard (which has a fee see below). This allows 11 to 15 year olds to travel at child fares on the Underground, DLR, Overground and some trains, free on the buses. If you are a short-term visitor (in London for up to 14 days) with kids between 11-15 you can take advantage of the Young Visitor Discount. This means you can get half price fares on an Oyster Card on a temporary basis for your child without going through the hoops and expense of getting an Oyster ID card. You do need to read carefully the rules of this scheme though. Group Tickets - 1 Day Group Travelcard for Groups of 10 or more This ticket is for groups of 10 or more travelling together. This in scope is the same as a for zones 1-6 and 1-9 providing unlimited travel on all services after 9.30am Monday to Friday and all day Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays. The pricing is particularly attractive if you have kids in the group and those staying in one of the outer zones, however if you are staying in the centre of London zones 1 to 3 it will be cheaper to purchase individual Oyster cards. If you are a group of 10 or more then do check out this product. Click through on the blog link right for more details. Oyster versus Travelcard - getting child rate travel One of the biggest nightmares for those on short visits to London with children is accessing child rate fares if they do not qualify for free travel. Note child fares are not supported by Contactless payment cards. If after reading the table below you find that you require an Oyster ID Card, then are taken aback by the cost and time required to obtain one for your child read on. These are your options for travelling without the Child Oyster ID Card (if your child is under 16) at child rate: • Pay for individual journeys at child rate • Buy an adult Oyster Card and load a Young Persons Discount onto it. For short-term visitors staying less than 14 days this is probably the best choice. • Purchase a 1 day Child Travelcard each day • Purchase your Travelcards or Oyster Cards online from the TfL online shop (banner below) • Purchase 7 Day Travelcards or longer from railway stations (you will need to bring a passport size photo with you for a railways photo card which is made up on the spot free of charge). Children Under 5 Children under five can travel free at any time on the Tube, DLR, buses and trams as long as they are accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket. You do not need a ticket for free travel. Children in this category do not need Oyster ID Cards*. Children 5-10 Under-11s can travel free at any time on buses and trams without the need for a Oyster ID Card*. You do not need a ticket for free travel. They can also travel free at any time on the Tube, DLR, Overground and any TfL train service when they are travelling with an adult who has a valid ticket. Up to 4 children under 11 years old accompanied by a paying adult travel free. Travel on the national railways which operate suburban commuter trains in London only have free travel for those under 5. In the last year or so many train routes in London have switched from the railways to TfL Rail. Confusingly a few national railways routes where both rail and TfL rail operate on the same tracks children under 11 can travel free on the railways trains - this includes the popular route for visitors between Euston and Watford Junction (for Harry Potter Studio Tour). Unaccompanied children between 5 and 10 must have a valid Oyster ID Card*. Children 11-15 Children aged 11 to 15 years must get an 11-15 Oyster ID Card* to travel free on buses and trams and at child-rate on Tube, DLR and London Overground services. You do not need a ticket for free travel, just the ID Card. You cannot get a standard child rate Oyster card without an Oyster ID Card. Young Visitor Discount (for visitors to London staying up to 2 weeks) If you are a short-term visitor to London you can get child fares on a special child Oyster card that expires after 14 days. There are restrictions. You can only get these Oyster cards credited with a Young Persons Discount at Underground stations, TfL Rail stations, Visitor or Travel Information Centres and Victoria National Rail station ticket office. For full details of this scheme click through on the Child Fares banner to the right. Alternatives to Oyster cards for children You can get around the Oyster ID card requirement by purchasing a 1 day Travelcard for the child (longer length Travelcards do require an Oyster ID Card), paying the cash fare or purchasing your Child Travelcard online in advance from the. You can buy 7 day child Travelcards at railway stations (not Underground or Overground) with a railway ticket office. The railways will issue a railways photocard free of charge if you bring along a passport size photo of your child. You can only use this for buying tickets from the railways which in practise for visitors means Travelcards. Children 16-17 All 16 to 17-year-olds can travel at child-rate on bus, Tube, tram, DLR and London Overground services with a 16+ Oyster ID Card*. However, you can only use this concession on Oyster cards and 7 Day Travelcards or longer, not 1 day Travelcards. Students 18+ If you are 18 or over and enrolled with a participating education establishment registered on the TfL scheme and are resident in London while studying there is an Oyster ID card that gives a 34% discount on Oyster Pay As You Go. *Oyster ID Cards Visitors to London from overseas can order an Oyster Photocard in advance for their children and collect on arrival at a travel centre. There is a Travel Centre at Heathrow Airport as well as in Central London. If you are resident in the UK but live outside London you can again order online but the Oyster ID Card is sent to your home address. Note you need to apply (online) at least 4 weeks prior to arrival. Note: There is a non-refundable £10-£20 administration fee for each Oyster ID Card. Once you've finished the quest for Raminus, he will tell you that there is a research project going on at one of the Ayleid ruin sites and that you should speak with Irlav Jarol to see if he needs any assistance. Irlav can typically be found in the Arch-Mage's Lobby, and it just so happens that he does need some assistance. He tells you that the Council of Mages needs him and that he hasn't been able to give the research project the attention that it deserves. ![]() In fact, the last report he received from Skaleel at the site claimed that they could not get past a blocked passage. Therefore, Irlav wants you to report to the ruins in his place. He hands you the Vahtacen Ruins Key and asks that you find Skaleel at the site to learn more about the problems that they're having. Vahtacen is an Ayleid ruin located to the southeast of Cheydinhal, right at the top of the Reed River. Once you're inside, take a left at the first intersection and follow the tunnel until you reach a large stone room. Speak with Skaleel here to learn that the research team is stumped trying to figure out how to activate a pillar. That's what they're calling it anyway, since they don't actually know what it is. What they do know is that it's enchanted and appears to be a lock of some sort. It also reacts to magic, and several of the team's mages have been badly hurt by casting spells at it. Skaleel tells you that you're free to try your luck on the pillar, but recommends that you don't use any complex magic on it - stick to basic spells with single effects. Use the Vahtacen Ruins Key to enter the next door, then continue down the hallway until you reach Denel. He will shed a little more light on the situation by explaining that there are inscriptions on the walls that are most likely related to the pillar. He mentions that if you could find some other reference for the markings, you might be able to determine what they mean. In fact, Skaleel might have such a reference, but she's been skulking over the way Irlav's been treating her and won't part with the book. Denel suggests that you might be able to convince her otherwise. Return to Skaleel and ask her about the book. She'll immediately hand over the Ayleid Reference Text, making you wonder why nobody else was able to coax it out of her. Regardless, take the book to Denel and he asks you to read the inscriptions to him so he can reference them within the book. Go around the pillar room and read each of the inscriptions, then repeat each one to Denel. The first relates to fire, the second to frost, the third to fortifying magicka, and the last to damaging magicka. The key to unlocking the pillar is to cast spells with such effects on the stonework itself. If you don't have the spells required, check the chest near Denel to find an assortment of scrolls that cover all of the needed effects. If you still don't have everything you need, leave the ruin and visit a city to purchase them. The trickiest one to track down with be the Fortify Magicka spell that affects a target, as you actually have to create it at the Arcane University. I'd recommend just using the proper scroll from Denel's chest. Once you have all four spells at your disposal, cast them at the pillar in the following order: Fire, Frost, Damage Magicka, Fortify Magicka. But you guys can try that if you want, so far so good for me. And you type 'regedit' for those who dont know, in either 'run' or like my OS type it into 'search programs and files' to get into the system to start the path listed in my quote. Although this does not directly relate to 'automatic' activation, I am attempting to keep the OS from shutting down after the activation time limit is over, which I think is relavent enough to be interesting in this forum. Let me establish some background before I elaborate on the subject of this post. I am a volunteer administrator for a small private school that has a handful of computers. The computer count (just over a couple dozen) breaks down as follows: 10 Dell OptiPlex 760 8 Dell Vostro 270s 7 Dell Inspiron 3646 Because of the low count and tight expenses, we do not own or utilize a domain server - all of these computers are running Windows in a workgroup. Originally, all these computers were purchased with Windows 7 Pro, OEM, but now all run Windows 10 Pro 1703 (15063) RETAIL [64 bit], as I dutifully ran the upgrade process on all of them before Jul 29th of 2016 and have kept them updated ever since. Because this is a school, and the kids mess with the computers no matter how well they get 'locked down', a computer gets 'hosed' from time to time and needs to have an OS rebuild. Now, even though I've outfitted all these computers with an SSD as the main boot and OS drive, it still takes the better part of 90 minutes to re-install Windows fresh, and reprovision the machine with all the desired software and settings. Additionally, I go through this cleaning and reprovisioning process every year right before school starts, just to make sure everyone has a clean slate. It takes a LOT of time. This year, I decided to make a 'golden image' for each of the 3 different machines so that all I have to do is restore an image to 'refresh' a machine. I started with the Dell Vostro 270s machines, and, for the most part, all went well. I imaged one, with the administrative account set to a simple password and the machine named 'COMPUTER'. Then I restored it to another machine, put a strong password on the administrative account, and renamed the unit with its proper computer name. The only thing that went wrong was that I did not disable 'fast startup' before imaging and because of this when the restored image booted up the first time on a different machine I got a special blue screen that complained about the machine changing. But I was allowed to hit a function key to re-boot cold, and then all was well. The cloned machine would come up and remain ACIVATED. I then moved on to the Inspirons and OptiPlexes, and that's when things went awry. On both these type of machines the restored image would fall out of activation very shortly after booting with a 0xC004F034 error. I've been trying to figure out why this would happen but I'm at a loss as to what makes these computers different from the Vostros, which have no problems with my process. I've also tried some fixes. One fix involved running some slmgr command that created a GenuineTicket xml file for each machine while the machine was in activated state, and then placing that file on the machine after imaging, however, that did not work. Another solution entailed using a microsoft account to link the digital license, again, while a machine was activated, and then logging into that account after imagaing the machine to restore activation. Again, no dice. I've hit a wall. At least I haven't LOST the activation status of these failed test machines as I can always re-install Windows 10 FROM SCRATCH and VIOLA, the machine is activated again. Is there any command or set of commands I can run after restoring an image that will make the machine think it has no previous activation info? I think what's happening is that the activation info of the imaged machine is no longer correct on the restored machine and instead of trying to reactivate, Windows just gives up and says 'NO, this is a bad activation state'. In any case, until I've solved this issue I have to spend 90 minutes reprovisioning a machine every time one gets messed up, so I'm very keen on figuring out what's going on. You need to sysprep a Windows installation before you capture it as a gold image, and it's generally recommended to do everything required to build the gold image in Audit Mode, before any user accounts have been created, in order to keep the source image as clean as possible. Sysprep causes Windows to go through the standard out-of-box setup when it next boots, including a new round of hardware discovery and a new activation attempt, since sysprep tells Windows not to assume it will be running on the same hardware the next time it starts. ![]() Additionally, if you wish to use Reflect for this type of image capture and deployment, you may need to have a license. Having individual Reflect licenses for each PC might be an appropriate substitute, but you may want to ask Macrium Licensing, especially if the latter option would be more cost-effective for you since it also allows you to keep Reflect installed on each PC, which the Deployment Kit doesn't. There are also free Microsoft tools that you can use to perform capture and deployment, but they do involve more effort and/or more infrastructure. But yes, as you've found, having a gold image in general can save a massive amount of time over doing a fully manual rebuild of multiple systems every time. Also, note that Windows can distinguish between different PCs that have the same hardware. Motherboards often have unique IDs (called a UUID), network interfaces have unique MAC addresses, and hard drives have unique serial numbers. What probably happened in your case was that if you didn't run sysprep prior to capturing your gold image, when you put the image onto the same model PC, the Windows installation on the new PC assumed that it was still booting on the original system it had seen before, but that it had just had its motherboard and hard drive replaced, and those changes weren't enough for it to fall out of activation. However, moving to a completely different system MODEL is of course a much larger change. I've explained this 'points system' that Windows uses to allow certain types and quantities of hardware changes without affecting activation status in other threads here. But the problem you may encounter eventually if you continue not to sysprep is that the license of the SOURCE machine might end up going defunct, because (I think) Windows updates Microsoft with the new 'hardware fingerprint' for the original activation when it detects new hardware, and without sysprep, all of those other PCs would be updating the license that was applied to the image source PC. ![]() ![]() Sysprep is a very useful and extremely capable tool if you start looking into using unattend files in order to automate things (the out-of-box setup answers, creating accounts, setting passwords, TONS of other stuff), but if you'd rather keep the prep simple and do a little more work on the back-end rather than increasing setup complexity to maximize deployment functionality/efficiency, basically you just have to do the following: 1. Perform a clean Win10 Pro install on your 'gold image' system. When the out-of-box setup interface appears, press CTRL+SHIFT+F3. Typically you have to do this no LATER than the step where you choose your privacy preferences, but Win10 Creators might allow it right when Cortana starts yammering at you. The goal is for the system to log straight into the Administrator account with a popup that it's running in audit mode. Hi, I also used Norton Ghost 15 in the past. Norton Ghost 15 does NOT work with Windows 10 nor does it work with Windows 8 / 8.1. The team that built and updated it. I was reading THIS POST on Symantec Connect and user cjm found a solution to activate SSR 2013 in Windows 10. I just made a couple of adjustments and tried Ghost. Close that warning when you see it, including each time you reboot this system while setting up the image. Perform any application/ driver installations you may require. Ordinarily this would also be a handy time to customize the Start menu, desktop icons, etc so that those settings would be applied for every new user profile created going forward, but that requires using an unattend file to specify this 'default user profile update', and Win10 1703 frustratingly has a bug that breaks Search when that's used anyway. Win10 1511 had this bug, Anniversary fixed it, and 1703 broke it again. When you've got everything ready, open Command Prompt and run the following: cd c: windows system32 sysprep sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown 4. The PC will shut down. At this point, do NOT let it boot to the hard drive again until you've captured an image of its hard drive. Capturing with Reflect will simplify things greatly if you have the correct license, otherwise you can boot into a regular Windows 10 Setup environment from installation media, open Command Prompt by pressing Shift+F10, and use the DISM tool to capture images of the system's C drive and its Recovery drive each to WIM files. Deploy to other PCs using your mechanism of choice. Again, Reflect makes this easiest (and you would NOT need to use ReDeploy afterward thanks to sysprep), otherwise you can boot into Windows 10 Setup and use DISM to apply the image files to the targets instead of stepping through the Windows Setup wizard, but that also requires you to manually set up the disk partition layout and (if using UEFI boot) configure the EFI and MSR partitions. Another option (and the one I use) is to modify the Windows 10 installation media so that the Windows Setup wizard itself will actually install your customized image rather than the standard Windows 10 environment, in which case the setup routine will do all of the disk setup work for you (and you would be able to skip capturing the Recovery partition image), but that requires making tweaks to the image file you captured first. Finally, there are network-based deployments (called PXE boot) that are even easier, but that requires something like Windows Server's WDS feature. Thanks for that most informative post jp. I figured that someone was going to tell me I needed to sysprep. I've stayed away from this tool up to this point but I guess I'll have to deal with using it now. I certainly thank you for the bit about all the Vostro images looking the 'same' to Microsoft, and possibly losing licensing status on the units that are not the 'golden' one. I'm going to re-image everything the way you have suggested, including the Vostros (to ensure licenses don't get stale), and we'll see what happens. For clarification, all these machines are standard MBR double partition installs; basically I wipe (diskpart clean) the install drive then install Windows to it and Windows choses this double partition format (small System + large Boot). As for my use of Macrium, I've been using Reflect 6 Free from a Windows ToGo environment. I understand this is probably not kosher licensing-wise, but this is all in the test phase right now. Moving forward, I guess I'll have to either use MS imaging tools or choose something that is truly free to use in a non-home environment. A technician's license is too expensive. I'd like to continue to discuss why the Vostros still work though. What is at play here? Windows certainly knows that each Vostro is different because--as you mentioned--each Vostro has a different MB serial, different MAC address for the embedded network, and a different disk ID. The same goes for the OptiPlexes and Inspirons though. So what's happening? Why does Windows activate fine on the Vostros but not the others? I ran 'slmgr /dlv' on two of the Vostros and one OptiPlex to get some insight. I've attached the output to this thread as out1 out2 (Vostros) and out3 (OptiPlex). I can see the Installation ID changes between the Vostros, and the Extended PID changes as well in the OptiPlex file. Not sure what all this means but am hoping someone does. I avoided sysprep for a long time as well, preferring tools like Norton Ghost, but once I got used to it I realized that it's not all bad. The whole image capture and deploy process is MUCH easier the SECOND time. Again, I would contact Macrium Licensing about this (licensing at macrium dawt com), especially given that you're discussing your usage on their own forums. If a Technician's Deployment Kit is too expensive (though they may offer discounts for non-profit/education scenarios.), as I said earlier, having a regular Reflect license for each PC in your environment may be an appropriate substitute, and I believe it would cost less given the quantity of PCs. If you can't find a properly licensed Reflect solution that works within your org's budget, then if you require further assistance using DISM to capture or apply images, I can help, although that might be best done over private message since that would be a completely off-topic discussion at that point. But yes, to prep your gold image, use diskpart to clean the disk and have Windows set up the MBR layout, which as you say will give you Recovery and OS partitions automatically. After you get it set up in Audit Mode, whether you need to capture the Recovery partition depends mostly on whether you will be deploying the image using DISM or by tweaking the Windows installation media to lay your image down through that wizard. In the former case, you'll need a capture of the Recovery partition; in the latter case, Windows Setup will handle that for you as part of its process. In terms of activation, Microsoft understandably doesn't share the exact details of how their activation process works, but my THEORY for why this is working for the systems that are the same model as your gold image and not the others is that Windows is seeing each of the other Vostro systems as the original system but simply with a different motherboard and hard drive. After all, motherboard and hard drive swaps aren't completely out of the ordinary, even when performed at the same time, so the Windows installation you're moving over is probably booting and saying, 'Ok, this is the same system I was originally installed on, except that the motherboard and disk were changed' -- even though it's incorrect in that conclusion in your case. So it might change its hardware fingerprint to reflect the new hardware, but not consider the change substantial enough to force reactivation or trip any other safeguards. However, when you clone that installation over to a completely different model, it can actually see that the model of the system is different. That information can be pulled from the BIOS (open PowerShell and type 'Get-WmiObject win32_computersystem' and you'll see your Model reported), and I'm sure that by itself is enough to tell Windows that it's now on a completely different system, with no possibility that this was just a parts swap. By comparison, if you sysprep those systems, then as long as you did in fact claim a Windows 10 Pro upgrade on all of the original systems at some point, the sysprepped installation will attempt to activate with Microsoft, and at that point those systems' hardware fingerprints should be recognized by Microsoft (even if you claimed the upgrade before the SSD swap) and then they should activate properly using their own licenses. Just to clarify. I'm not trying to restore the Vostro golden image on an OptiPlex. I have an OptiPlex golden image for that. I would NEVER restore an image to a machine that was not an exact hardware replica (unless it was a data recovery emergency). So in theory, the restore of the OptiPlex image to another OptiPlex is no different than a Vostro-Vostro restore.yet something IS different. Perhaps there is some significant difference in what the BIOS reports for the OEM strings between the OptiPlexes, but the Vostros look exactly the same.I'll check this, but I have serious doubts that your theory about Windows thinking the machine had a motherboard swap is correct. I wish there was some way I could access that info from Microsoft to see if it's true, like logging into some website to see activation info about a system.how many times it's been activated, how many times its hardware changed and WHAT was changed.that way all these theories could be validated.until then this is all just conjecture. Also, to add some more info about my Macrium licensing, I DO possess a Macrium Reflect 7 Workstation license, otherwise I would not be able to post here at all. But yes, for this imaging trial I realize I'm exceeding the bounds of the free version. I'll just switch to an alternative free imaging solution when I've got everything down and working. It's just that I've been using Macrium for so long as it's my goto program for all home imaging, hence it was natural to continue to use it at the school (and we are a tiny non-profit, so it still feels like home). I simply wasn't thinking about licensing, so thanks for pulling me back into the reality of the business world. Macrium products have served me well and I wouldn't want to anger them. Ah ok, I didn't realize you were using different gold images for different models. In that case I can't account for the different behavior. However, sysprep is specifically designed to allow your 'NEVER' scenario of building an image on one hardware platform and deploying it to another one -- that's what the 'generalize' parameter I mentioned above does. It's quite adept at that, and that functionality is quite handy because you don't have to keep several images maintained anymore. I still remember what a chore it was at a previous job every time we had to change our corporate image standard when we maintained a library of Norton Ghost images, one per hardware model -- we had to find a 'wipeable' example of the model of interest, push the current image to it, make the changes, capture a new image, and repeat that over and over again for each supported model. It was a gigantic waste of time (and storage), especially because we had to support entirely too many models. With a sysprepped WIM file, worst case you have to ensure that drivers for all possible target hardware platforms are included in a single image, but given that you're deploying Windows 10, chances are that between its native hardware support and Windows Update, it will cover all driver needs for the models you're working with anyway. And if not, you can inject driver packages into a WIM file using DISM, or if you ever do get a Windows Server box in order to use WDS, you can actually maintain a driver repository separate from your image(s), and when the image is deployed over the network, WDS dynamically pushes the drivers required for the target system from its library as part of the image process -- so if you want to add support for a new model later, you just have to add any necessary drivers to the library and you now support that platform, no need to touch the image at all. And incidentally, the ReDeploy feature of Reflect is also specifically designed to allow restoring images to dissimilar hardware, albeit in a 'single instance migration' scenario rather than a 'capture gold image and deploy to multiple targets' scenario. It too works quite well. Deploying an image built on one hardware model to another one is not nearly as scary as you seem to think, as long as you learn to use the tools designed to enable this. Corporations do this all the time, not to mention PC manufacturers. Another perk of DISM by the way is that you can install Windows Updates directly into WIM files, so for example every few months you could push the latest cumulative update into your image so that your PCs don't each have to download 1GB+ worth of updates immediately after they're imaged. I'm telling you, Sysprep and DISM are worth your time to look into for your use case. It may be frustrating early on, but once you get a handle on the process, you're going to love the efficiencies and simplifications and the time you will consequently save overall. (That's even more true of learning PowerShell, but that also takes longer.) Instead, they require you to either activate the card and choose a PIN number, or use the 3-digit security code on the back of the card to activate the card before choosing a PIN number. • If you are getting a replacement card, your old PIN number will still work. Verify that the card you received is one you applied for or requested. If you're not expecting an ATM card, contact your bank immediately to find out if the card you received is legitimate. Some banks will issue a new debit card if there was a problem, like potential fraud, associated with your existing debit card. • If you did not request a new debit card, make sure to find out if you need the debit card. Make sure to read the fine print or contact the bank to make sure the debit card doesn't have hidden fees or that switching to a new debit card is required. • Examine the card's expiration date. If the expiration date is approaching soon, contact your bank. This is often a sign of a fraudulent card. Go to an automatic teller machine. Choose an ATM that is well-lit, situated in a visible location, and owned by your banking establishment. Insert your card, use your PIN or your temporary PIN, and follow the instructions on screen. Some banks may require you to go through an activation screen, while other banks may automatically activate the card when you enter the PIN. Others require you to do a balance inquiry. • You may conduct transactions at ATMs that are second- or third-party owned once you activate your card, but they cannot perform the functions necessary to activate your card.
